Measurement

Measure marketing against revenue, not vanity metrics

Impressions, clicks and follower counts are easy to collect and easy to misread. Measurement should connect effort to commercial outcomes.

Vanity metrics feel good and prove nothing

Reach, impressions, clicks and follower counts are inputs, not outcomes. They are useful only in relation to what they produce. A campaign that generates attention without enquiries is a cost, not a result, however impressive the dashboard looks.

The metrics that connect to revenue

Useful measurement traces the path from spend to customers.

  • Cost per qualified enquiry, not just cost per click.
  • Conversion rate from enquiry to opportunity or sale.
  • Contribution — what the acquired customer is worth relative to what they cost.
  • Channel-level quality, not just channel-level volume.

Attribution is imperfect — measure anyway

No attribution model is perfect, because customers rarely move in a straight line. That is not a reason to abandon measurement. Consistent tracking, sensible attribution rules and a habit of comparing channels on outcomes rather than activity will always beat guessing.

Build the feedback loop

Measurement only pays off when it changes decisions. The point is to see which channels produce revenue, what it costs to acquire it, and where prospects are lost — then move effort accordingly. A measurement system that nobody acts on is just decoration.

Questions

Direct answers

What if we cannot track every conversion?
Partial data is still far better than none. Track what you can, be transparent about the gaps, and use lead quality and pipeline movement as practical proxies.
How often should we review performance?
Regular enough to act on trends, not so often that you react to noise. Weekly operational checks and monthly or quarterly strategic reviews are a common balance.
