Conversion rate optimization, without the myths

CRO is not button colours and gut feeling. It is a disciplined loop of research, hypothesis, testing and measurement applied to real friction.

What CRO really is

Conversion rate optimization is the practice of increasing the proportion of visitors who take a desired action — an enquiry, a booking, a purchase. Done well, it is a research-driven discipline: you study where people hesitate and why, form a hypothesis, change one meaningful thing, and measure whether it helped.

The myths worth dropping

CRO has accumulated a set of folk beliefs that waste effort.

  • That it is mainly about button colours and small wording changes.
  • That a single famous test result will replicate on your site.
  • That higher conversion is always better, even if lead quality drops.
  • That testing is unnecessary if the improvement seems obvious.

What actually moves the needle

The largest gains usually come from clarity and confidence, not decoration.

  • Making the offer and the next step unmistakable within seconds.
  • Removing friction in forms, navigation and load time.
  • Answering the objections that stop people from acting.
  • Matching the page to the promise that brought the visitor there.

Measure the right outcome

A conversion is only valuable if it leads somewhere. Optimising for more form fills while lead quality falls is not progress. The useful loop measures not just how many people convert, but whether those conversions become customers — and feeds that insight back into what you test next.

Questions

Direct answers

How much traffic do we need for CRO to work?
Structured improvements to clarity and friction can help at almost any traffic level. Rigorous A/B testing needs enough volume to reach a reliable conclusion, but many of the biggest wins come from fixing obvious barriers first.
How often should we test?
Continuously, but not randomly. Testing should follow research, focus on meaningful changes, and be judged on commercial outcomes rather than conversion rate alone.
